You can drop Acrobat and keep working with PDFs. The right replacement depends on what you do with them. This guide starts with the free tool already on your Mac and climbs from there.
Why people leave Acrobat#
Common reasons are cost, subscription pricing and needing only a fraction of its features. The product profile for Acrobat also lists a heavy feel and the upsell and cancellation experience as complaints. We treat these as pointers, and we will link sources when we publish our test results.

The options#
From free to full-featured
- Free
Preview
Built in. View, annotate, fill, sign, rearrange pages.
- Free
Acrobat Reader
Adobe's free reader with basic markup. Full editing needs a paid plan.
- Paid
PDF Expert
Edit text and images, merge, OCR in paid tiers.
- Paid
Adobe Acrobat
The full set. The product you are leaving.
Free options#
Start with Preview. Open a PDF, use Tools → Annotate for markup, fill forms in place and sign with the trackpad or camera. Free tiers from other vendors come with limits, such as watermarks, page caps or reading-only modes, so read the terms before you rely on one.
Be careful with online converters. They upload your file to a server, so avoid them for contracts, IDs and financial documents. Our guide to vetting software shows how to judge a tool before you trust it.
Paid options#
PDF Expert is the Mac-native replacement we track. Its profile lists a free tier, a subscription and a lifetime purchase. For a head-to-head, read PDF Expert vs Adobe Acrobat. To weigh a lifetime price against a subscription, use the calculator in free vs paid Mac apps.

Choosing the right alternative#
- Mostly reading and signing: Preview.
- Weekly editing: PDF Expert.
- Redaction, certificates, formal workflows: stay with Acrobat or move to a lower tier.
- Not sure: try Preview for a week, and note every time it falls short.
